Stephen Brett

« Back
Stephen Brett claimed the distinction of finishing as the leading point-scorer for both Canterbury and the Crusaders in 2007. The step-son of former Canterbury and All Black centre Victor Simpson, Brett finished his first full Super rugby campaign with his tally of 90 points, which included two tries. He then accumulated 149 points for Canterbury in the Air New Zealand Cup to finish just two behind the province’s NPC record – which is held by Crusaders coach Robbie Deans and has stood since 1989! That total included five tries. Often labelled ‘a Dan Carter’ look-alike, Brett shares more similarities to the All Black pivot than just the position he plays: both are old boys of Christchurch Boys’ High School. The keen golfer, who is the best with the sticks among the Crusaders and plays off a single digit handicap, gained higher honours with the Junior All Blacks in 2007. Injuries meant Brett had a frustrating 2008 Air New Zealand Cup season, where he appeared only five times for Canterbury. A talented first five-eighth who would have been on the verge of an All Black call-up had he been fit, Brett was troubled by calf, quad and knee problems but hopes to put those behind him for the 2009 Rebel Sport Super 14.
