A former Southlander who played 19 games for the country’s southern-most province prior to relocating to Christchurch in 1994, Simon Forrest won the Ranfurly Shield in his first year with Canterbury, scoring one of the side’s four tries during the shock 29-26 win over Waikato in Hamilton. Forrest went on to make 44 appearances for Canterbury between 1994 and 1998, although his run was interrupted by a season trying out in the National Rugby League inSydney, Australia, in 1997. By the time he hung up his boots, the dashing fullback had scored 171 points in his Canterbury career. He also managed four appearances for the Crusaders during the foundation season in 1996. Forrest also gained ‘fame’ in another sense in 1996 when he married the Commonwealth Games gold medal winning New Zealand swimmer, Anna Simsic.
