Rua Tipoki was appearing for his third Super rugby franchise when he arrived in Christchurch for the 2007 Crusade, having previously appeared for the Blues and the Highlanders. North Harbour’s captain when they lifted the Ranfurly Shield off Canterbury in 2006, the veteran midfield back also led the New Zealand Maori side to the 2007 Churchill Cup tournament in England. Tipoki’s shield success with North Harbour was the second of his career, having earlier played a major role for the Bay of Plenty side that shocked Auckland to win the famous trophy in 2004. Both provinces were experiencing shield success for the first time in their histories.
