Pat Lam
« Back

He is remembered as an All Black, an Auckland and North Harbour representative, a fine servant for English Premiership club Northampton, and also as an indefatigable warrior for Manu Samoa; but few people realise that Pat Lam was also a foundation Crusader. Lam was called into the side prior to its tour of South Africa at the end of the first Super 12 and wound up starting at No 8 in the final three matches, which included a final round loss to the Highlanders at Lancaster Park. The Auckland Marist loose forward enjoyed a superb career as an international with Samoa, playing 33 Tests between 1991 and 1999, which included three Rugby World Cup appearances. Perhaps his finest moment as a player came during the 1999 World Cup when he rallied his Samoan side to a shock 39-31 win over the tournament hosts, Graham Henry’sWales, in front of a stunned Millennium Stadium.
