A try-scorer on both his Canterbury and Crusaders debuts, Joe Maddock compiled a more than useful record of try-scoring in New Zealand prior to taking up a contract in England. Maddock scored two tries in a Ranfurly Shield defence against Buller in 2001 to open his Canterbury account, and departed two years later having run in 27 tries from his 30 appearances for the province. While his try against the Highlanders was one of just three that Maddock managed in his freshman Super 12 campaign, and he failed to score again during his second season, the Prebbleton winger still secured selection in the New Zealand Maori side during both of those years, where his scoring touch continued. From eight matches for that side, Maddock crossed the goal-line eight times.
