A talented player who many felt could have gone on to even greater heights had he been based with a more dominant provincial union, Damon Kaui nonetheless still managed an impressive 99 appearances during his representative career with Bay of Plenty. He also achieved Super rugby representation with both the Crusaders and the Chiefs, featuring at fullback in the final six matches after he joined the inaugural campaign midway through the competition in 1996. The Rangiuru club winger then made two appearances for the Chiefs the following year after again having been roped in as a reinforcement midway through the competition. Kaui scored 188 points for the Bay of Plenty during his provincial career, while he scored two tries on debut for the Crusaders against Northern Transvaal in 1996.
